Let us Run with Endurance - Hebrews 12

Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us,  looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

These Scriptures follow right after Hebrews 11 where the writer details those who have gone before us that exercised faith in their lives. With those people in mind, the writer says, “therefore since we are surrounded by these great people of faith, let us run our race” (paraphrased)

These truths became active for me a couple weeks ago when I ran my 3rd half marathon. These races, for me, are such a picture of what our world should look like – everyone encouraging those running whether they know them or not. (Side note, we are all on this “race” called life, encourage someone today in their race. They may be just about to give up but with your encouragement it could give them hope to keep running)!

As I ran, the Lord had me look around. He said, “look around you – you are literally surrounded by witnesses.”

May those who have gone before us in faith, continue to be a source of encouragement as we run our race. Run YOUR race with endurance, knowing that you are being surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.

I challenged you to think about who your “witnesses” are – family members, friends, co-workers, fellow believers? Who are you surrounded by? If you cannot think of any, pray for Him to bring those great people of faith into your life or pray about a body of believers to join.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.
